About Kovilakanda
Despite its relative proximity to Kandy, the community of Kovilakanda suffers from a lack of connectivity, due to the lack of transport links (frequent bus routes) and a deficit of infrastructure, limiting access to jobs and development.
Since 1995, Wembley Estate’s revenue has helped finance the following community services and ventures:

Senior Services
In a community with limited services for the elderly, seniors in Kovilakanda had little access to organised support. Wembley Estates established and funds a senior society of 62 members. The programme provides regular gatherings, nutritional support, and excursions to support wellbeing and social connection.

Supporting the montessori school
In 2013, Wembley Montessori faced closure, risking long commutes for its youngest students. Wembley Estate helped keep it open by restoring facilities, providing supplies, and supporting volunteer teachers. Today, 17 children continue their education in the community.

School bus service
With no nearby middle school, families in Kovilakanda previously managed long commutes on their own. Wembley Estate donated 2 school buses. Today, 42 students commute to the nearest middle school using the service.
Livelihoods & Vocational Training
In addition to providing 22 agricultural jobs, Wembley Estate runs a sewing workshop for village women to earn supplemental income through the production of upcycled tea bags. The initiative supports livelihoods while creating additional economic opportunities within the community.
